This paper is based on a lecture given by Prof. Saskia Eleonora Wieringa. The lecture was organised by Sangat, Jagori and Kartini in New Delhi in September 2006. Trained as an anthropologist, Prof Wieringa has mainly worked in Indonesia and her major research interests include women (sexual) empowerment and agency, gender planning and same sex relations.
